Observing Life

I mentioned recently that I am enjoying my newly discovered permission to read all I want. Now I just need someone to give me permission to walk away from a book that I'm not enjoying. If you read enough books, you're going to get some stinkers eventually. I think I most appreciate the books that are horrible in the first two pages. Then I don't feel quite so committed.

Yeah. I wish I had a dollar for every book I continued reading 'cause I thought eventually something would happen, and then it never did.
So here's your permission: by now you have read more than enough to have developed your own taste you can trust. If it begins to smell like a loser book, feel good about saving some reading time for something worthwhile!

Yes. . .I tell my students to give it two chapters. If it's not good after two chapters, it needs to go away.

I also give you information to stop when you're not enjoying a book/or it's not any good. This is not exactly the same thing as a not-good book, but people make fun of me because I read the end of a book (last 1 to 2 pages)first. Through the years, especially before I retired, I had so little time to read that I didn't want to waste my time reading something that didn't end well.

Well, it's been a long day -- and I mostly lurk and not comment on blogs. I meant, give you "permission", although I guess if you need information, I could find some for you.
