The Cleft of the Rock

I probably get a dozen hits a day from someone googling (still love that verb!) "the cleft of the rock". Some, I guess, are looking for the scripture reference (Exodus 33:22) and several are looking for "Cleft of the Rock Ministries" -- which don't have a website, or I would refer you there. Sorry. But it makes me think, again and again, why I chose the name for my blog that I did.

I confess that there wasn't just a tremendous amount of thought that went behind it -- but when I thought of "The Cleft of the Rock", it completely fit. I love that in Exodus, when God places Moses in the cleft of the rock, Moses was having a one-on-one conversation with God. And, at this point, Moses basically said to God, "I need to be REALLY sure of you -- let me see your glory!"

God told him,
"I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But," he said, "you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live." Then the LORD said, "There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen."

I am precisely where God has placed me, and I have a front-row seat for His glory. The cleft of the rock --it fits.

I have always loved that too--that personal interaction--that Moses got to SEE God. . .an amazing and wonderful thought.

While it's not a "rock", we do have a new cleft chin in the family. Benjamin was born a couple of weeks ago. Got a few pics posted on our site. http://scottphotography.blogspot.com

Good thoughts, by the way.

David, I didn't know Benjamin was even on the way! Congrats! Troy has a very distinct cleft in his chin that he keeps covered with fur most of the time, but both of my kids inherited it, and you could see it in their ultrasound pictures! I love a sweet cleft in a drooly baby chin!

Sarah, I've been catching up with your blog.

Sorry I haven't been by in awhile. We're deep into finding all we can about Alzheimers, late stages, since my mom received the diagnosis. She's received 24 hour care from our dad and her children for some time, so the doctor's telling us what she had was no surprise, and yet a sadness settled on me that I hadn't expected.

I know about that cleft-of-the rock front row seating with Jesus on center stage.

For me, he must remain central even though sinister things are waiting in the wings. And when he's there....well, "he is shade on my right hand" and I can experience his joy even in the middle of many chores.

I can't help but do a little sign language when we sing those words, "He hideth my life in the cleft of the rock and covers me there with his hand, and covers me there with his hand."

Your humor, I needed. He works through you and your gifts. The Lord is marvelous. I still stand amazed.

...Cathy
