The Wal-Mart by your house!! I LOVE the gas war! (Can you believe I'm calling $2.80/ gallon a war?) I actually paid $2.74 because I had a shopping card.

It's 2.99 in Houston at Wal-Mart. ICK!!!!!

I'm feeling lucky that we filled up the morning of the storm for $2.53.

I think Bush needs to put a price cap on gas. . .

On this VERY Republican blog - can I say that President Bush needs to step up!! Yes, we need a cap on prices now! People are hoarding gas in Birmingham and we are looking at $3.00 easy by next week here in Abilene.

Some Federal employees won't be recieving pay checks because they are paid out of New Orleans. What about people work for one the the effected school systems, city goverments, casinos, shipping companies, hotels? How many large companies are headquarted in NO? What if your aren't able to access your money that's in a bank somewhere in South Miss or LA? The economy is looking bad right now for alot of people. The least that can be done is the capping of oil prices.

Forgive the rant but I feel helpless and I would like to know that the man I voted for is helping our citizens.

Denise,

First of all, I completely agree. To asuage your fears some (and info to pass on to anyone who needs it)--I have family from New Orleans that is here in Houston. If you have an acct. at a bank in NO that also has banks in TX (or anywhere else), you can access your fundage. Also, your home owners insurance will cut you a check if you cannot get your money because you can't find a bank that is the same as the one back home. If you don't have home-owners insurance, then FEMA will cut you a check--and there are FEMA centers set up in the most "refugee populated" areas of Houston right now since people, obviously, have no transportation. Most companies are suspending bill payment for 30-90 days for right now. The kids are getting into schools (there is one in my classroom today), universities are opening their doors without charging tuition, and several franchises and businesses in Houston are offering jobs to those who would like to be employed. I know the story is the same all over the U.S. I just spoke to a friend in Searcy, and they have about 50 families set up at camp Wyldewood. It's not air conditioned--but there's a bath house and a cafeteria.

I think that right now--at least in south Texas, a lot is being done on a local level until the cogs of bureaucracy begin to keep pace.

We will all pray.

It does my heart good to hear about my old camp being put to use. Now if I could go to cook for them I could feel useful.

Please pray for Houston and all of those here. There are reports (and accurate ones, because my co-worker's husband is one of the ones this effects) that mass drunkeness (as in people laying by the freeway over at the dome) and car jackings are occurring near the Astrodome. Evidently several companies are telling their employees to cancel all their calls on businesses in that area of town due to the violence that is escalating. We feared it, but hoped it wouldn't happen.

This is so sad.
