So Long, Old Friend

I don't know if I've brought up my recurring migraines here. I had my first one in over a year a few weeks ago, then 3 or 4 in the next few weeks. When one rolled over me within 15 minutes of starting in my Sonic Route 44 Diet Coke, I suspected I may be onto something. Someone has suggested that it's the aspartame, and I'm not discounting that notion, but right now I think it's the caffeine that is giving me trouble. So far, decaf. Diet Coke isn't bothering me, so I'm suspecting the caffeine as opposed to the aspartame. So, I'm making it, but Sonic has yet to realize the glories of offering decaf. Diet Coke. Jason's Deli and our new Chick-Fil-A serve decaf, though! The only problem is that caffeine is what gets me through the afternoon without falling asleep. I'm about to drop right now!

Life continues to roll over us, and work has cranked up to busy just in time for the kids' school to ask what all I can help with in the way of field trips, end-of-year parties, and other activities. So, I must go to get us ready for pre-church baseball game, the night before the 2nd grade egg hunt. No wonder I'm so tired -- that sentence wiped me out!

Have you tried the diet Coke with Splenda? It might do the trick. . .although I'm pretty sure Sonic carries fully leaded all the time. Mention it to your
Sonic person--there are a couple of Sonics in Houston that have it.

I had a friend who used to get cluster migraines (over an eye). The active ingredient in the medication prescribed to counteract these was caffeine! In a very large dose!!! (I think it was called Cafergot) or something...
strange, huh?

Kendra is serious about her diet coke! Maybe you just need to increase your diet cokes to match the dosage in the Cafergot!

Once you wean off of the caffeine, you'll be so glad that you did! My husband used to have severe back pain and we finally figured out that it was his kidneys in pain from all of the caffeine. No more back pain and very few migraines for him now.

You can do it!!

I will add one more thing on the aspertame subject. One of our friends was told by her doctor to quit drinking her diet coke because she was experiencing numbness in her fingers and her feet and toes, it was the aspartame that was causing it and now she can feel her fingers and toes again!

I too am an avid Diet Coke drinker...in fact, you will rarely find me without one. I am betting that your headaches are not from the caffeine though...I have been having headaches that I will not call migranes and my OB/GYN suggested that I take two Excedrin Migranes (which has loads of caffeine) and go to a coffee place for a double shot of expresso. He told me that he understood why I didn't want the extra calories from a regular soda but that the aspartane has been linked to headaches among other things.

aspartame is BAD BAD BAD BAD! Any way you slice it, aspartame is not something humans should be ingesting. It is a weird stinkin' chemical.

There are a lot of other things that can trigger those migraines - it's different for different people. While my migraines are relieved by caffeine, caffeine can trigger a migraine in someone else.

But that aspartame stuff - wickedly evil. Oh how beautiful it seems, and yet so toxic and destructive.

On a completely different note, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence of migraines having hormonal sources in women of childbearing age. There is a world of women who have had no more migraines after hysterectomies (how's that for a drastic fix?).

Mmmmmm, Diet Coke. I'm not sure I can live without you.

There was a time when I drank nothing but Diet Coke. I started getting headaches, too. I went cold turkey and left caffeine completely behind. It was rough for a few days, but I felt much better afterwards.

Of course, this was pre-children. And since I had my third, I am, once again, a caffeine junkie. But now coffee is my drug of choice.

Good luck!

We are all so territorial about our drinks. :) I try to do more iced tea now than diet Coke. Especially after my dr. told me that was partially contributing to my heart double beating. Sometimes I don't even have one in a day. . .and sometimes I have three. When I have three, I definitely feel the difference--more tense, jittery, etc. I do half caf/half decaf tea to cut down on the caffeine even more, but I still put sweetener in it.

And according to my dad, who reads about such things, aspertame turns into famaldahyde at high temperatures. Ickadoo. . .

And COMPLETELY off the subject. . .I can no longer find my mother at home. . .I have to call her on her CELL PHONE (yes, Glenda Watts) because she is always out fishing (yes, Glenda Watts) with my Daddy. She says she does it to keep an eye on him, but she has actually begun to enjoy it. People have asked her why she doesn't just get him to stay home. She says that the boat is like a play pen. . .you put a baby in a play pen with their toys, they are perfectly happy, they can't get out, and you know right where they are all the time. Same thing with Daddy in a boat. Very clever, Momma.
